Pet Cremation Frequently Asked Questions
Whether your pet has passed or you are planning ahead, Heartland Pet Cremation can help you understand your options. Find answers below about pet cremation in the St. Louis area, including costs, transportation, picking up your pet’s ashes, and ways to remember your companion.
How do I begin making arrangements for my pet?
Call (314) 241-5565 or begin with our online arrangement form. If your pet is at a veterinary office, let the staff know you have chosen Heartland Pet Cremation so we can coordinate their care.
We will ask for your contact information, your pet’s name, species, approximate weight, and current location. You will also choose between private cremation, with your pet’s ashes available for scheduled pickup, and no-return cremation, then complete the cremation authorization. You do not need to have everything decided before you call.
Is there a pet cremation provider near me in the St. Louis area?
Yes. Heartland Pet Cremation is located at 2130 Papin St., St. Louis, MO 63103, near Lafayette Square. Our standard service area extends 50 miles from this downtown location. We serve communities throughout the greater St. Louis area, including Clayton, Ballwin, Chesterfield, South City, North County, West County, Jefferson County, St. Charles, Wentzville, Edwardsville, and Belleville. Call (314) 241-5565 to confirm mileage and any transportation charges for your address, or view our location.
How much does pet cremation cost, and what is included?
Our basic private pet cremation package with pickup costs $245 for pets under 25 pounds and $345 for pets over 25 pounds. The maximum pet weight we can accommodate is 250 pounds.
Reduced pricing is available when you bring your pet directly to our downtown location by appointment. We also offer no-return cremation, a group service for families who do not wish to collect individual cremated remains. Please contact us for current drop-off and no-return prices.
The private cremation package with pickup includes:
- Pickup of your pet from your home or veterinary office within 50 miles of our downtown location.
- Private cremation, with only your pet’s cremated remains prepared for scheduled pickup at our downtown location or one of our parent companies’ satellite offices.
- A basic white plastic urn.
- A clay paw print and fur clipping in a soft velvet bag.
Transportation outside the included area may involve an additional fee. Other urns and memorial items are available at additional cost. Ask us to confirm the total for your arrangements, and visit our pet cremation services page for package details.
Can you pick up my pet from my home or veterinarian?
Yes. We offer pickup of pets from family homes and veterinary offices. Call with your pet’s location so we can arrange transportation and confirm availability. If your pet is at a clinic, please let its staff know who will be collecting your pet. Pickup within 50 miles of our downtown location is included in the private cremation package with pickup; additional mileage charges may apply beyond that area.
Can I bring my pet directly to your facility?
Yes. Reduced pricing is available when you bring your pet directly to our downtown facility. All drop-offs must be scheduled in advance. Call (314) 241-5565 before coming in so we can confirm a time and provide the current drop-off price.
Do you provide cremation for pets other than dogs and cats?
Yes. We care for dogs, cats, birds, and other family pets weighing up to 250 pounds. Tell us your pet’s species and approximate weight when you contact us so we can explain the arrangements available for your companion.
What does private pet cremation mean?
Private cremation means your pet is cremated alone, and only your pet’s cremated remains are prepared for your collection. This allows you to keep the ashes in an urn or choose another personal way to remember your pet. Select private cremation if you wish to keep your pet’s ashes. Collection is by scheduled pickup at our downtown location or one of our parent companies’ satellite offices.
How do you make sure the ashes I collect are my own pet’s?
At the time of cremation, your loved one is assigned a cycle tag with a specific identification number. We also complete a color-coded tag with the owner’s and pet’s details. This tag stays with your loved one throughout our process, including cremation, processing, and boxing of the cremated remains.
We maintain an individual digital file for each private cremation client to record their arrangements. These records and identification procedures, together with cremating one pet at a time, help ensure that the ashes you collect are your pet’s.
Where is the cremation performed, and does my pet stay in your care?
Heartland Pet Cremation provides cremation at our own facility. Your pet stays in our custody throughout the process. Our team works directly with families and veterinary offices and can answer questions about how your pet is identified and cared for.
What questions should I ask when choosing a pet cremation provider?
These questions can help you compare providers and understand the care your pet will receive:
- Where is the cremation performed, and who will care for my pet?
- Will my pet be cremated alone, and will I be able to collect their ashes?
- How is my pet identified throughout the process?
- What is included in the price, and which additional charges could apply?
- When will the ashes be ready, and where can I collect them?
Our team welcomes these questions and can explain the arrangements before you make a decision.
What if I do not wish to keep my pet’s ashes?
We offer no-return cremation for families who do not wish to collect individual cremated remains. With this option, your pet is part of a group cremation, and the combined remains are respectfully scattered. Individual ashes cannot be recovered afterward. You can indicate this choice on our arrangement form. Please discuss the service and its price with us before authorizing cremation.
When will my pet’s ashes be ready for pickup?
Private pet cremation typically takes four to five business days. Our team will confirm when your pet’s ashes are ready and schedule collection with you. If you are planning a memorial gathering and would like the urn present, confirm the pickup arrangements before choosing a date.
How do I arrange to pick up my pet’s ashes?
Once your pet’s cremation is complete, we will notify you by email. We will then call you to schedule pickup at our downtown location or one of our parent companies’ satellite offices. Please confirm the pickup location and appointment time with our team before visiting. If you need help arranging collection, let us know.
Do I need to purchase a separate urn?
No. Our private cremation package includes a basic white plastic urn. If you would prefer to upgrade, browse the pet memorial urns linked on our website. Please follow up with our team if you have any questions about your purchase. If you plan to bury the urn, check the cemetery’s requirements before choosing one.
Can my pet’s collar, blanket, or favorite toy stay with them?
Blankets and toys may be cremated with your pet, but they can affect the color of the cremated remains. Our crematory operator decides which items can be safely included, taking their materials and potential emissions into account. Please discuss any items you would like included before intake.
We aim to give collars and other belongings you wish to keep back to you at the time of intake, so they remain in your care. Please set aside any irreplaceable keepsakes before your pet is picked up or brought to our facility.
What can I do with my pet’s ashes?
You may keep the ashes at home in an urn, arrange burial in a pet cemetery, or consider scattering in a meaningful location where it is permitted. Before scattering or arranging burial, confirm the property owner’s permission and any requirements that apply to that location. We can also discuss cemetery arrangements and memorial items, such as a burial marker.
Can I make cremation arrangements for my pet in advance?
Yes. You may submit an online arrangement form before services are needed. Planning ahead gives you time to choose private or no-return cremation and consider an urn or other memorial preferences. It also gives your family and veterinarian a clear point of contact when care is needed.
We can create an individual digital file to record specific urn requests and any other wishes for your pet’s care. We do not accept payment in advance; payment is collected at the time of need. Keep your arrangement information where your family can find it.
